R'hyn, Shiae and Serriena discuss Weyr business. Previous Next
R'hyn still looks lost in this weyr, and perhaps even moreso when he's sitting at one of the chairs at the table, head bowed over some hide or another, frantically scribbling.
Shiae politely clears her throat at the entrance to the bowl, pausing there until she's acknowledged. She carries a small stack of hidework before her. "R'hyn? Sir?"
R'hyn blushes, right on cue. It's the sir. It must be. He lifts his head, and glances up: "Oh! Shiae. Uh, come in. Please."
Shiae gives a faint smile in return and comes the rest of the way into the room. When she deposits the stack of hides on the table beside you, there's a tangle of orange, black, and green atop them. "How are you doing? I haven't had much chance to see you since we got back. H'natin and Kymberli are doing well, I assume?"
"Um," says R'hyn, full of eloquence, nodding his head, "All right, I think. Um--" He pauses, the tangle catching his eye, a frown crossing upon his features. "Sorry, what's that for?" There's a vague nod, in regards to the two mentioned riders.
Shiae gives the hides - or perhaps it's the knot - a nod. "It's yours, if you want it," she answers simply. "Faranth knows I've had it long enough. If H'natin and Kymberli work well with you, perhaps you'd want to give it to one or both of them more permanently."
Serriena comes into the weyr.
"No!" There's almost a panicked note to R'hyn's voice -- and he's flushing scarlet again, though in truth that's not remarkable. "No, no, take it back. It's yours. I don't need it, and I think your experience is-- uh, important! For me. To me. I--uh, yeah."
Shiae eyes the Weyrleader dubiously from where she's standing next to his chair. "You're not just saying that? Trust me, I won't mind. /Don't/ mind. It would be a relief. And I won't let Carianth squawk about it, either."
Serriena walks through the vaulted entrance of the Weyrleader's Weyr. The panicking tone in R'hyn's voice is not unheard and the new senior queenrider steps forth calling out, "R'hyn? Are you okay?" She ventures further into the weyr. In her hands she has a small bundle of hide envelopes.
R'hyn shakes his head quite rapidly, offering Shiae a seat rather blindly with his hand as he catches Serriena's words. "Serriena! Come here and make sure that Shiae doesn't go and retire on me!" Turning back to Shiae, the timid weyrleader admits, "If you /have/ to, I won't stop you, but-- please? For now?"
Shiae offers Serri a rather tight, somewhat embarrassed smile of her own as she sinks into the offered chair. "I don't -have- to, no. I just thought..." Fingers gesture toward the stacks of hides. "You might prefer to have someone you picked in the position. Instead of being stuck with me."
"What's this? Trying to quit already Shiae?" Serriena can only cast a gist of a guess as she drops some of the letters on R'hyn's table for him to sort out later -- when he's done with his hides that is. She gives them a cursory glance and then back to Shiae. "I suppose I could see why the Weyrsecond position would be undesirable if there is that mountain of hidework hiding R'hyn's desk." She moves to stand next to R'hyn. "I know it would be a pity for him to be stuck with you Shiae," Serri gives a slight smile to the Weyrsecond that can only be termed as catty -- is she baiting the other woman? "After all you did such a terrible job before as Weyrsecond.... let's not forget your horrid performance as Weyrleader."
"Serri!" whines R'hyn, taking her words in totally the wrong way. "No, no. You're good at it, Shiae, and I need you. You've done this before, and I don't have a clue, and I'm bad at it." R'hyn's babble would continue, but he needs time to breath, and that gives him a little composure. Serriena's letters get a grimace; R'hyn suddenly has three piles in front of him, and it's all quite overwhelming.
Shiae isn't looking at the other woman as she speaks; her only reply as Serri gets snarky is a quick grimace. "Apparently your Weyrwoman doesn't care for me, sir," she informs R'hyn in low tones, not lifting her eyes from the desk. "I can provide suggestions if you like, but I won't go against her."
"Shiae," Serriena's voice turns rather stern as if to cause the woman to be quiet a moment. "Honestly," her voice softens, "I suppose you don't know me well enough to even know when I am joking with you." She presses her lips together and then continues, expelling a sigh. "Shiae you did a terrific job as Weyrsecond and in fact I had recommended to R'hyn to keep you on as Weyrsecond." She looks at R'hyn and nods to him asking him to confirm, "Did I not specifically ask you to consider her?"
R'hyn's response is sharp, and perhaps out of character. "Shard the Weyrwoman, Shiae, because I /will/." There's a point, just after this, when he actually parses what Serriena is saying, and he flushes again. "Er, yes. She's right. She did. And I /do/ want you, and I /do/ choose you, Shiae. Please take back your knot?"
Serriena didn't miss that curse on herself and she just gives R'hy /THE/ look -- the look that all women can give men who suddenly find themselves with the "foot-in-mouth" disease.
Long fingers rub at Shiae's forehead, then the woman herself looks up, catching each of you in turn with her gaze. "Oh. Well, um... In that case..." She slips the tangle of threads off the top of 'her' stack of hides. "I can't say as I'm /pleased/, but I'll continue to serve Ista." A sigh, and she weaves the tri-colored strands about her fingers. "I suppose H'natin will go back to Z'vind's wing? What about Kymberli?"
If R'hyn could sink into the woodwork right about now, chances are he'd be long gone. He flushes, and turns his head away from Serriena. "Just for the moment," he promises, perhaps untruthfully. "Until I know what I'm doing. Thank you." It's a heartfelt thanks. "Uhm. I don't know." He glances between the two women, somewhat hopefully.
"H'natin will be placed in Hana's wing actually, but Kymberli's future is uncertain right now." Serriena says to Shiae. "She did a very good job acting weyrsecond for Ista and her hard work is not going unrewarded. In fact, I came to speak to R'hyn about several things regarding the new positions and who can fill them. She makes herself comfortable, plopping into one of the chairs.
Shiae's eyebrows go up. "Hana's wing?" she echoes, confused. "Why there? Hana's already got a strong contigent of browns. Z'vind could use a few more endurance dragons to keep the wing active." So much for not wanted to get involved.
R'hyn shuts his mouth, for a time, as if trying to stay out completely. "Uh," he says, eventually. "You did, Serri? Um-- what about putting H'natin in Z'vind's wing, and Kymberli in Hana's. That could work, right?" He gives a somewhat uneasy chuckle; he's in way over his head.
Serriena shakes her head. "That's what we need to speak on R'hyn." She glances at Shiae and says, "There is good reason for that." She looks back to R'hyn. "Hana has been reluctant to choose a Wingsecond since hers was taken in the fall. H'natin has some experience now as Weyrsecond and I believe he could be a good Wingsecond for Hana." She glances at Shiae. "In the meantime, Z'vind has come forth and told me he feels his wing does not completely listen to his commands as they did for Kytara." She laces her fingers together. "Z'vind was comfortable in the Wingsecond position and from what I gathered, he wishes to be there again. Kymberli, however, shows good potential for being a Wingleader. She may ride a green, but then so does our Weyrsecond." Serri's glance goes to Shiae, "I believe that if we asked her to, she would step in and fill what used to be Kytara's position."
Shiae listens silently, an eyebrow quirking up at Serri's reasoning. "That could work. Or perhaps send Kybmerli to 'second for Hana, and H'natin to replace Z'vind. What do you think, R'hyn?" Nothing like putting someone on the spot.
R'hyn doesn't quite squeak, though it's a close run. "Uhm," he says, intelligently. "I think they could both do a good job in either position," he concludes, quickly.
Serriena tries not to snicker as she watches R'hyn squirm out of making a decision. "You know R'hyn, we have a tie here," she says, "Shiae feels H'natin should be Wingleader and I think Kymberli would make a good match for the wing," she glances at Shiae, eyes sending signals not to reply to anything said.. this might be R'hyn's true test. "So what do you say? Should we put Kymberli...or H'natin as the new Wingleader? Your vote will be the deciding vote." HAH! Force him into making a decision.
Shiae chimes in, "Either one of them could do the work, I think. But I can't make the decision, and neither can the Weyrwoman." There is sympathy in her expression as she presses, "You're the Weyrleader, R'hyn. The final decision has to be yours. I can suggest, but I can't - /won't/ - do your work for you." (repose)
R'hyn turns his head from Shiae to Serriena, then back again, and finally rests upon Serriena - though only for a moment, since after that he's looking at the table again. "Uhm," he says, once again. "Oh, shards. I--" he swallows, shaking his head. "Kymberli for Wingleader, then. And next clutch that graduates, more browns to that wing than to Hana's."
"Very good R'hyn," Serri smiles proudly as if some mental test had been passed. She's not pleased by his decision on Kymberli -- so much as the fact he just made /a/ decision. "You'll be a true Weyrleader yet." She raises her fingers to her chin, viewing him thoughtfully.
Shiae gives the bronzerider an encouraging smile. "Yes, -sir-. I'd suggest at a few more months working with Kymberli before giving her that knot, though. I mostly had her doing my hidework, not actually leading and drilling."
R'hyn flushes prettily, though he notes, quickly, "Uh, Shiae? Can it just be - please - R'hyn? 'Sir' makes me nervous, and we have to actually work together." He takes her advice with a rapid nod of his head; "I'll, uh, have her doing some things. For a bit. And then-- yeah."
Shiae says "You have to get used to it," though she relents with a bit of a nod. "All right, R'hyn it is. Unless I'm reporting, though, or there are other people around." Or if she's got a stick up her butt about something, of course. She unwinds the remains of her knot from her fingers and stuffs it heedlessly into a pouch. "What else did you want to talk about?"
Serriena nods. She stands to her feet. "Well that's a relief anyhow." One step towards R'hyn being a better Weyrleader, apt to make decisions on his own. She looks at the hidework and shakes her head. "R'hyn I'll be back later to help you with that." She points to the hidework. "But after that we'll have to work on keeping you caught up."
R'hyn ums, then indicates the hides that Shiae brought in: "What are these for? Are they urgent?" Serriena's comment draws a hurried nod. "Yes! Right. All right. Thank you."
Serriena waves and heads out.
Serriena heads out of the weyr.
Shiae shakes her head with a dismissive wrinkle of her nose. "Not especially. They're a collation of various types of formations for certain winds. Seems like I've been working on -that- since A'son tapped me." "Not that it always does much good," she adds dryly, aiming the nose-wrinkle now at the hides.
"Since A'son," murmurs R'hyn, almost in awe, glancing across at Shiae again, almost nervously. Perhaps he'd forgotten how long Shiae's been Weyrsecond. "Oh. All right. Uh, thank you. That-- that's probably it, then. Unless you have anything else I should know?"
For Turns. You can practically count the grey hairs.
R'hyn's in awe. Or intimidated. One or the other.
Shiae only shrugs to that. "Not especially. If you'd like, I was figuring to let H'natin lead today's drills, then send him over to Hana's wing at supper. That would let you handle Kymberli. What do you think?"
R'hyn's nod is over rapid and obliging, though he manages to add, "That sounds reasonable. I'll get her to do some things during our next drill session. Uhm. That's probably it, then." He gives the hides in front of him a somewhat dismal glance. "I should probably think about this stuff."
Shiae finally takes the hint and gets to her feet, her chair scraping against the floor. "All right. If you have any questions about my hides, just ask. Otherwise - do you want to see me tomorrow, to help plan 'Fall for the one over Nerat day after?"
"Thanks," says R'hyn quickly. "Yes, that's a good idea. Planning 'fall is always good. All right. Meet here, um, after breakfast.
"After breakfast," she echoes, bestowing a decisive nod on you. Well, /somebody/ has to be decisive here. "Otherwise, until you need me." She pauses a second, to see if you have more to say, then heads for the weyr entrance.
R'hyn evidently has nothing to say, and nods his head, quietly. Phew.
Shiae heads out of the weyr.
Shiae has left.
