28-07-02: Insanity

Shoshana ambles in from the center bowl.

Maykara ambles in from the center bowl.

Ilesyn's perched at the seat behind her desk, legs curled up so that she's basically sitting up them-- no surprises here; this is quite a usual position for the Mindhealer while at work. At work she is, indeed, her nose buried in a hide, her stylus flicked with vague, idle motions every so often, expression absolutely inattentive to the rest of the infirmary around her which is, as has been usual this winter, and even now into spring, full of cold and chill patients.

Shoshana comes in, along with a handful of other riders, Dawn riders to be specific, including Maykara. "Hello, hello." She calls into the infirmary, glancing around. "Faranth. Hm. Suppose I should've given them advance notice." She muses to Maykara. Mm. Yeah. Y'think?

Maykara is brought, or more like dragged, into the infirmary. The greenrider isn't happy and it's obvious by her rather muttered protests. "Honestly, I am in good health! I don't /need/ to be checked." More like she doesn't want to be. She then looks over at Shoshana with a bit of a frown. "Possibly. Oh look. They all seem to be busy. Lets go!" And she turns to leave, but is held firmly in place by another wingrider. Maykara only grumbles and shrugs, only then noticing some other patients. Sick ones. The greenrider smirks, then looks at Shoshana again. "Maybe you should ask her for assistance?" And a finger points briefly to Ilesyn.

Ilesyn, contrary to her apparent obliviousness, apparently seems to have kept note on entrances and exits, for even as Shoshana calls her greeting, the Mindhealer's hand has lifted in a vague response to it, though she avoids lifting her head. "Please don't," she notes predictably, apparently in response to Maykara's suggestion. "Because I have no wish to be bothered, and I bet you'd all be much happier in the long run if you didn't. It's traditional." Her head remains defiantly lowered. Not interested.

"She's a mindhealer." Shoshana points out. "I don't know if she can do your physicals." Finally, word to the actual reason behind dragging them all to the infirmary. "She's also the only one not busy." The greenrider observes, because, it seems sitting and ...doing whatever Ilesyn is doing, doesn't count as busy. "Maybe I could get you all...mind exams instead. Make sure you're all sane." There's a thought.

Maykara looks a bit surprised by Ilesyn's response, but uses that as another attempt to escape having to have a check-up. "See, Shana? She doesn't want to be bothered. So lets not, hmm?" She's quiet long enough though, to hear the wingleader's explanantion. Kara shakes her head at the mentioning of mind exams though. "What? Do you think your entire wing has gone mad or something?" Maybe only she has. She looks at the other riders for support, but gets none and her comment is left hanging. The wingsecond then shrugs. "Better not be worse then a physical." she mutters.

"I can, but I won't," offers Ilesyn, cheerfully unapologetic. "You wouldn't want me to, anyway. The candidates all end up terrified, although none of them drop out. It can be somewhat surprising. Besides which, I /am/ busy, and I don't need to examine you all to announce that you're all insane." She shuffles her hides, as if attempting - rather obviously - to look busy; she clears her throat.

Shoshana glances over as one bronzerider, V'ane, mutters something about needing to be checked to make sure his fair skin isn't in danger, and she rolls her eyes. "This is for your benifit, not to feed your ego." Ahem. "I don't know 'Kara, but it's good to make sure they haven't gone mad. Or aren't at risk of going mad." Or maybe she's just gone mad. "Busy?" Peer. "You don't look busy. What're you doing? And you can hardly call them insane without checking them."

Maykara glances up at V'ane as well and smirks again, rolling her eyes a bit as well at the bronzerider's comment. "You fair skin is fine. Not like you'd burn the way you frett over yourself." she mumbles, before looking back at Shoshana. "I'm sure we aren't or are not in risk of going mad and we're just wasting time doing this." At the last comments given by Ilesyn, Kara frowns deeply, her attention now focused more so on the mind healer. "Insane? We're all insane? And you call yourself sane when you make a decision without even looking at the person? Or is that how things work?" Now the greenrider just looks puzzled at what she said. Maybe she is insane?

"All riders are insane. They have to be, to even consider accepting search," explains Ilesyn, nonchalant. "And I'm very busy. I'm sorting through my reports, to try and find a correlation between the similar-- yet remarkably different-- disorders seen in two sisters. Fascinating. She shifts her position; her legs are moved, and though she continues to sit on one of her feet, the other is stretched out and deposited atop her desk, a few empty mugs and plates shoved out of the way in the process.

Shoshana gives the healer a slow, inspecting look. "Really..." She drawls, arms folding. "Doesn't that imply then, that the dragons are insane? Because they offer Search in the first place?" Behold, skewed logic. Her eyes loose focus briefly, and she chuckles softly. "I don't suppose you could take just a few moments out of your time, could you? I only want you to look over one person. She wants you to make sure she's sane."

Maykara blinks, her expression blank for a moment as she seems to search for a come back to that remark, but Shoshana beats her to it. The greenrider only nods, "Good point, Shoshana!" Or at least, she thinks it is. She gives a slightly disapproving frown at Ilesyn's behaviour, but shrugs it off before smiling faintly in amusement at something passed. "Right. Just a few minutes, really. And there is someone else as well who might be of interest to see, now that I think of it." A sideways glance goes to Shoshana, as though she expects more to be said from the other greenrider.

Ilesyn shakes her head. "On the contrary," she explains, finally lifting her head so that she can regard Shoshana as she speaks. "Dragons know very well that they /need/ a rider, and that the eggs will hatch into dragons that also need riders. Thus, they search because they have to, and because Pern needs them to. It is only negative for the rider-to-be, who has foolhardedly accepting that which will likely lead them to an early death or disfigurament, not to mention a very limited career path. They seem to take on the idea that they are a hero, and must do it for Pern." She shakes her head, somewhat sadly. "I think I've already given you an analysis, but if you insist," she actually goes so far as to smile, "I shan't object to examining the both of you."

Shoshana looks almost startled at the well thought out explaination, "Well." She seems at a loss. There goes all her arguments. But a shuffling noise from outside grabs her attention and she looks towards the bowl entrance, just in time to see a large green head...or at least, part of one, fill the space. "Shells..." She turns back to Ilesyn, gesturing, "That's who we'd like you to exam. She wishes to prove to you that she's quite sane, and is hardly a one-way death ticket. So does Ceilath I think too. So if you will?" She says, gesturing to the exit and starting towards it, Mioneth's head moving to unblock it.

Shoshana walks off northwestwards to the center bowl.

You amble northwestwards to the center bowl.

Maykara ambles in from the infirmary.

Maykara raises a brown and is again, caught off guard by those comments. "It's not that bad. It's a risk you take, really." she offeres as yet another unusual comeback that probably has no meaning at all. She then looks in the direction of the Wingleader, stiffling a bit of a laugh at Mioneth's rather persistant nature. Kara gestures for Ilesyn to follow as well. "Best do what she says. Looks like Ceilath does.." A momentary pause. "Definately. Don't keep 'em waiting now." And she gives a bit of a crooked grin.

Mioneth is standing with Ceilath, both not far from the infirmary entryway, another green, a brown, and a bronze...dragons of the riders brought into the infirmary presumably, also with the two greens, all seeming to be waiting.

Ilesyn follows, but only, it seems, because she's at a loss of what else to do. Once she's made it out of the infirmary cavern, she hesitates by the entrance back to the warmth, shivering in the chill of the early spring air. "I don't know what you're up to, but I'm not sure that I want a part of it," she insists, somewhat warily, digging her hands into her pockets with a somewhat defiant air. "Besides which, I already said that I didn't think dragons were at all insane. I've never examined a dragon before, though people always used to insist I should examine Leyrith."

Ceilath is not to far off from Mioneth's side, her gaze fixed on the infirmary's entrance. The green rumbles in a light, almost melodic tone as they finally emerge and she huffs in slight interest at the sight of Ilesyn. An almost 'so this is the one?' type of reaction. The green looks over at Mioneth for a moment, then back to all those assembled.

Shoshana chuckles quietly at the sight of the dragons, "Well. There's a first time for everything right? Now you can proudly say you've examined more than just humans." She glances towards the dragons, Mioneth echoing Ceilath's huff, and thrusting her muzzle forward. "Be patient Mio..." Is murmured, as she adds to Ilesyn, "They seem quite eager to meet you. I think they're a little miffed too, about the whole insanity thing." Well, don't be reassuring or anything.

"It's made rather difficult by the fact that I can't get responses from them directly," notes Ilesyn, taking a step forward with a certain bravado unfaltering in it's nature. "Hello," she adds, towards the two dragons - another glance is made towards the other dragons about, but she concentrates upon the two greens. "People generally are," is her cheerful comment. "Miffed, I mean. Insanity isn't easy to accept, but once you see the facts, it's difficult to deny, and you do get quite used to it."

Maykara almost immediately brings her riding jacket more tightly around herself, crossing her arms across her chest as she seems to dislike the rather chilly weather. She dislikes a lot of things. Looking back at Ilesyn, she chuckles. "I think it's too late, you already are a part of it, rather you like it or not." Umm. So there. Kara smiles towards Ceilath, the green dragon also lowering her head down to be more level with those currently on the ground. Once Ilesyn approaches, she gives a questioning rumble and then another huff of interest. Or a reply in greeting. "Quite eager indeed." she echos Shoshana slightly.

Shoshana's lips twitch, as if she's trying very hard not to break into an amused grin. "She wishes to know." She conveys for Mioneth, to the mindhealer, "How you plan to examine her. And... if it's really fair that you make assumptions that they're insane, without knowing them." Judging from the low rumble, there's more that was said, that the greenrider chose not to share.

"I /said/," repeats Ilesyn, though not losing her blase attitude in any way, "That I didn't consider dragons to be insane. Only riders. I have a lot of experience working with people, so I'm usually fairly adept at making judgements from just how people act. Usually," she continues, her hands dug deeper into her pockets, shoulders hunched together with the chilly winds, "I ask questions, and analyse the responses. How they're said, verbal tones, expressions, the exact wording. This is made more difficult, by the patients in question." Her right foot is scuffed into the snow underfoot, as she notes to Maykara, "I've gathered that much. At least I shall make my point, I believe."

Maykara chuckles softly, unable to really hold back her amusement at somethings said. "Alright, so I misunderstood some of the things you said." she says towards Ilesyn, looking momentarily to the two green dragons, then back to the mindhealer. "Just from how they act, hmm? Interesting. What if the person is faking it?" And why she is asking questions? She then nods a bit, "Well, we can and probably do have to convey what Ceilath and Mioneth say, to help you. So I don't think it should be too hard." A smile slowly spreads across her face and she tries very hard not to laugh at something. "Ceilath likes you..by the way." And the green echos that with a pleased rumble, still staring at Ilesyn intently.

"How can a rider be insane, if her dragon is sane?" Shoshana asks, eyebrows lifting. Her question earns a quick croon of agreement from Mioneth. Likely she got the very question from the green's mind. "And sure, we can convey what Ceilath and Mio say. We can even imitate their tones...though..." She trails off as Mioneth leans her head in closer to the mindhealer, crooning again, this time to Ilesyn. The thought's left unfinished. "Yes. Mioneth likes you too."

"Ceilath is welcome to like me. And Mioneth, too," says Ilesyn, easily, though slightly perturbed by Mioneth's closer movement. "Though they mustn't let that colour their responses to my questions." Her head is inclined into a sharp nod, as she remarks cheerfully, "If a person is faking how they are acting, then they are generally easy to pick out - because they do not manage to act naturally. I generally watch people over a long period of time, too, and it's less easy to hold up an illusion, even a good one, over time. Oh - well, it's perfectly possible. That's just the way it is," explains the Mindhealer, lazily. "All right. How do you both feel?" That, apparently, is directed towards the dragons.

Ceilath finally moves closer to Ilesyn as well, but keeping enough room for Mioneth and as not to crowd the poor mind healer. She then tilts her head to the side a bit, as though getting a sideways glance would be better. The green then whuffles gently, looking up and at her rider briefly, then Mioneth and back to Ilesyn. With the question answered, Maykara happily conveys it, after listening to the mindhealer's explanation. "Must be hard work, to study people so closely. Ceilath says she is fine, and that it's a rather pleasant morning to be out. How are you?" The greenrider grins.

Shoshana looks steadily more confused by the moment, from mental transactions presumably. After a few moments of silence, with her staring at Mioneth, she blinks. "/What/?" Blinkblink. To Ilesyn, still looking rather bewildered, she says, "Mioneth says that she has no need for the examination anymore. It seems she's...ah...figured everything out. She's quite pleased with herself about it actually." To back that up, Mioneth warbles, head coming even nearer to the Mindhealer. "In...fact..." Surprise flickers across her face, "She and Ceilath want you to join the ranks of the insan--er...candidates."

"What kind of thoughts are going through your minds?" continues Ilesyn, before earing Shoshana, pushing onwards without hesitation; there's an expression of absolute facination upon her face, infusing her cheerful smile. "Hard work, yes, but absolutely fascin-- wha?" For once, the healer is struck dumb, and now her expression does a complete change about, heading towards absolute horror. "And you think," she begins, very slowly, "After what I have told you about my opinion on candidates, and riders, that I would be amenable to this?"

Ceilath rumbles in delight as she seems to echo and fully agree with Mioneth's decision, whuffling again towards Ilesyn. The green still keeps a fair distance between her and the mind healer. Well, for awhile longer anyways. She moves closer, almost a bit too close. "Ceilath, dear, I don't think she likes having you so close." A pause, as the greenrider chuckles. "Right now, she says she is thinking of having you join the other candidates..err..like what Shoshana just said." Umm, right. She then looks a bit puzzled, glancing at the other greenrider for a bit of help. "I didn't know of your opinions. Do you accept to becoming a candidate for the current clutch? Surely you can..err..well, find some value in it?"

Shoshana shrugs slightly, "I don't know. Truthfully, that's what I told Mioneth. But she's got a very long, complicated explaination for it, which she calls logic." She pauses, noting, "When it all boils down to it, she thinks you're insane." Behold, the tact. "And therefore, by /your/ standards, will fit in perfectly with the rest of the candidates." She quiets as Maykara asks formally, adding brightly, "And hey! You could try and mindheal all the other candidates!" Poor candidates?

Ilesyn backs away, slightly, explaining, "I called you all insane. I said it was insane to want to be a hero like that, and I mean it." Perhaps the close proximity of the dragons is taking a toll, though; she's gnawing at her lip, almost stammering as she speaks. "I've already done a paper on candidates; there isn't really anything more that needs to be done." She hesitates, watching Shoshana, her eyebrows-- well, lifting. Very high. "I-- I'm /not/ insane. I am /not/ insane. I wouldn't Impress, because I'm /not/ insane," she avers, rapidly.

Shoshana holds her hands up, palms out, in a position of defense against Ilesyn's repeated words against her insanity. "Well, Mioneth thinks you are." Is her simple responce. "She says that riders can't be insane, with sane dragons. Therefore, you're logic is skewed, you're insane, and fit to be a candidate." That's the short version at least. Her attention breaks for a few moments, and she makes a face, "Shells. I've got to run. K'nal's got sweep reports for me. 'Kara, I'll see you later. And...um...see you too Ilesyn, whether as a candidate or not." And with that, she hurries off with Mioneth, who gives a parting croon to the mindhealer.

Sanriel has arrived.

Ceilath croons softly, almost as if to help comfort the startled mind healer. She brings her head back just a bit, but still keeps herself close to Ilesyn, as though she were the most interesting thing on the face of Pern right now. Maykara only smiles softly, her arms still tightly crossed across her chest in an attempt to keep herself warm. "I woldn't think to call myself a hero. More like a protector. Someone's got to keep Thread from devouring everything." Right. She then raises a brown in interest. "Maybe you can add more to the paper then?" Kara then blinks in surprise as Shoshana suddenly leaves after sharing Mioneth's explanation of things. "See you later, Shoshana! Shells..she moves fast." Ahem. Back to Ilesyn, she nods. "Yes..well, if we're all considered insane, are we not sane then? Hmm. That didn't make much sense. But what really does is that Ceilath and Mioneth both see something in you and you have the offer to accept Search." A pause and she smiles again. "If your dead set against it, you don't have too." Ceilath rumbles again, eyeing Ilesyn and seeming persistant to get her point across.

Ilesyn's brow furrows at Shoshana's somewhat peculiar logic, her head shaking several times as she watches after the Wingleader. "Add something to my paper," mutters the Mindhealer, spying Sanriel out of the corner of her eye, and turning positively white. "I'll prove to you that I'm not insane," she announces, finally, as if desperate to get out of this situation. "Yes." She'll prove it by not Impressing? Seems - almost - logical enough. "Let's /go/." Quickly. Before... Sanriel sees her? Illogical, at best.

Sanriel steps out into the bowl to catch the last of that offer and stares at Maykara with saucer-wide eyes before she looks to Ilesyn, eyes narrowing and a malicious little chuckle escaping her lips. Walking over - hurrying, even, to catch the pair before they take off, she puts in. 'DId I just hear that correctly? You're /Searching/. /Ilesyn/? /The/ Ilesyn who considers all dragonriders sucicdally insane?"

Ceilath croons again, only this time in pure delight as the green seems quite pleased to have the mind healer joining the rest of the candidates. Or just accepting, for that matter. She finally backs off almost completly, giving her rider an approving glance. Maykara grins widely now, "That'll be a good way to prove it. Wonderful! We're both glad you have accepted." She then seems taken aback by the peristance of wanting to go so quickly. "Alright, best to gather your stuff and meet me in the lower caverns and I'll take you to the barracks so we can get you settled and all." At the arrival of Sanriel, she smiles then seems a bit puzzled. "I didn't Search her. Ceilath did. And yes, you heard correctly." Back to Ilesyn, "Meet at the lower caverns, alright?" And with a polite nod to Sanriel, she begins to head off in that particular direction.

Too late. Ilesyn turns scarlet-- she'll never live /that/ down, and turns away, as if urging Maykara on with her rapid, hurried movements. She's going to regret this. In fact, by her expression, she probably has already started down that path with strides as great as the ones she physically takes now. "Fine, fine," she mutters, both to Ceilath and to Maykara, as she hurries into the caverns.

You amble northwards to the candidate quarters.

Sanriel ambles in from the eastern caverns.

Maykara leads the way into the candidate barracks, moving to the side a bit to allow Ilesyn to pass and smiling widely as she begins her usual speech. "These are the candidate barracks, where you and the other candidates will be staying until the eggs hatch. Just find a cot, any cot and make yourself comfortable. Have you been a candidate before?" And she waits for that answer before continuing.

Ilesyn's not got many things with her, almost as if she doesn't intend to stay in the Candidate Quarters for long, though she makes no comment to that nature as she follows Maykara into the cavern. Upon instruction, she puts her things down upon an empty cot, listening in silence. "Uh," she begins, somewhat hesitantly, muttering something that sounds suspiciously like an affirmative beneath her breath.

Maykara doesn't quite seem to catch the muttered affirmative for awhile, but eventually she just considers that she did confirm that. "So you know the drill. You'll be given chores to do and there are rules to follow. Simple, really." And she counts them off on her fingers. "No drinking, no sex, no pranking, no skipping of the chores given to you, no fighting and no leaving the Weyr. At any time. I don't think I need to explain those, as they are fairly clear." Umm. Right. The greenrider then glances out towards the outer cavern and back to Ilesyn. "I'd best get back to Ceilath soon. Any questions? If not, I'll leave you be to settle in."

Ilesyn's face falls more and more at each 'no' - especially the sex one, and then the mention of chores. She nods, however, slowly, leaning up against the edge of the cot somewhat hesitantly, as if she wants to attempt to appear as though she doesn't belong at all. "No questions," she agrees, somewhat faintly.

Osasune ambles in from the eastern caverns.

Osasune trots in, singing a little ditty about finding socks for the laundry.

Maykara nods her head slowly and smiles widely, apparently unaware of any ill feelings. She is quite dense, sometimes. "Good. I'll be heading off now. Do try to enjoy yourself. It's not all /that/ bad." Riight. And for certain, the greenrider probably couldn't remember her own candidacy. As she heads out, she gives Osasune a passing smile and nod, as well as Sanriel before disappearing into the eastern cavern.

Osasune nods amiably to Maykara as the rider passes. "Good afternoon." She pauses, peering at Ilesyn. "Oh! Is someone sick?"

Maykara walks off southwards to the eastern caverns.

Ilesyn turns around quickly, as if in the hope that she will avoid catching the gaze of anyone and everyone-- although it's obviously too late, as Osa catches sight of her. "Er," she begins, muttering something else - this is becoming a habit - which isn't quite audible.

Leaning against the doorframe, Sanriel watches Ilesyn with rich amusement and - surprisingly - very little comment. The twinkle in her eyes says it all, should the mindhealer dare to look her way.

Osasune trots further into the room. "Oh, hello, Sanriel. Umn. Was it Garron? He keeps coughing. I think he really is sick."

Ilesyn is /Not Looking at Sanriel/. In case that wasn't immediately clear. She probably won't look at the Harper ever again - at least until she wins her bet, and proves... Er, well. That's another story. "I'm not a body healer, remember?" This probably isn't helping her cause one bit. Whatever her cause is, now.

Sanriel can't help but notice, but is satisfied merely watching the mindhealer - because of course, she /knows/ it. "Hello, Osasune." Sanriel replies, her voice tinged with amusement. "Are you Searched, as well?"

"Did Peji snap?" Osasune inquires. "She seems a little... unsettled. And she giggles too much. But dragons don't Search the insane, do they? So maybe she's just weird. Poor dear. Umn. Yes, Sanriel. For perhaps a sevenday or so."

Ilesyn's eyes grow wide at Osasune's mention of insanity, and her skin goes pale again. She stammers out something about going to have a nap, and promptly leaves the quarters-- even though a pile of her things are sitting upon one of the cots. Curioser and curioser.
